Signs That Your Car’s Drive Train Needs Urgent Repairs

May 24, 2024

Your car’s engine delivers power, but it’s the drive train that transmits this force to turn the wheels. And like any complex mechanical system, drive trains need periodic inspection and maintenance to operate smoothly. Unfortunately, many drivers don’t know this, resulting in delayed and costly repairs.

Mechanic Under Car| TRC Automotive

Ignore these early signs of damage, and you’ll risk being stranded on the road when your drive train eventually fails:

  • Strange Transmission Noises. If you hear odd clunks, whines, or humming from underneath your car, it could indicate an issue with your transmission or differential. Gear damage can also produce rattling noises as metal parts knock against each other. A mechanic usually inspects the drive train for faulty bearings, low transmission fluid, or worn gear teeth.
  • Burning Smell. Drive train fluids reaching high temperatures due to excessive friction can produce a distinct burning odor. You may notice the smell more when turning, since maneuvers put extra stress on your vehicle’s axles and CV joints. Don’t ignore this warning sign; overheated drive train components can cause further damage.
  • Vibrations or Shaking. If your steering wheel or seats vibrate intensely at certain speeds, it suggests an unbalanced driveshaft or universal joint damage. Axle misalignment can also cause uncomfortable shaking. Any sudden vibrations should be inspected immediately, since they will likely intensify the more you ignore them.
  • Fluid Leaks. Evidence of transmission, brake, or gear oil leaks under your car demands immediate attention. Leaks usually signal possible gasket issues or cracks in the transmission case. Either way, they can drastically lower your vehicle’s fluid levels, causing other drive train components to burn out rapidly.

Windshield wipers are typically made of a rubber blade attached to a metal or plastic arm. The rubber is designed to be replaced, as they can wear out or become cracked due to exposure to the sun and weather elements. In this blog we will briefly discuss about making your windshield wipers last.
