A Guide to Timing Major Auto Maintenance Services by Mileage

April 25, 2024

Staring down at your odometer, watching the miles tick by, have you ever wondered if those digits can provide clues beyond trip distance? They certainly can! Your vehicle’s mileage acts like an internal clock, indicating when it’s time for specific maintenance and repairs to keep everything running smoothly.

Oil Change | TRC Automotive

Here are some of the manufacturer-recommended auto maintenance schedules based on miles driven:

  • Every 3,000 to 7,500 Miles: Oil Change. This regular auto maintenance is crucial for engine lubrication, cooling, and cleaning. Old oil can start to sludge up and lose its protective qualities between 3k (in older car models) and 7.5k (in newer models) miles.
  • Every 6,000 Miles: Wheel Alignment. Your wheels also take a beating with those rolling miles, needing realignment every 6,000 miles or so. However, hitting potholes or curbs too frequently can knock your wheels out of proper alignment before then, so watch out for signs like uneven tire wear. A realignment will help prevent your car’s tires from wearing out too quickly.
  • Every 15,000 to 30,000 Miles: Auto Tuneup and Fluids. Don’t skip this auto maintenance milestone; it prevents major engine issues in the long run. Within this mileage range, your car requires scheduled factory maintenance, during which it will receive an auto tuneup. This will involve upgrading spark plugs, ignition wires, and other engine components. Any fluids that need topping off, like the transmission and brake fluids, should also be serviced.
  • 30,000 to 50,000 Miles: Shocks & Struts and Brakes. Shocks & struts absorb bumps and jolts from the road, which results in their degradation over years of use. Taking care of these essential components helps ensure your safety and comfort as the miles roll on. At this point, your mechanic may also recommend a complete overhaul of your car’s braking system.

Windshield wipers are typically made of a rubber blade attached to a metal or plastic arm. The rubber is designed to be replaced, as they can wear out or become cracked due to exposure to the sun and weather elements. In this blog we will briefly discuss about making your windshield wipers last.
